Once we rendezvous at our agreed-upon location, our journey commences as we traverse the picturesque Rif mountains. En route, we pass through Tetoun city, soaking in the breathtaking vistas of the mountainous terrain until we arrive at Chefchaouen, nestled at the foothills of the Rif mountains. Chefchaouen’s medina boasts a Spanish-style square, adorned with quirky arts and crafts stores, rooftop restaurants, and cafes where we’ll enjoy lunch. Following our exploration, we continue onwards to Fes, where we’ll spend the night in a traditional Moroccan riad.
After a hearty breakfast, we embark on our journey, heading southward. Our route takes us through Ifrane, often referred to as “The Moroccan Switzerland,” and Azrou, traversing the Middle Atlas mountains. Along the way, we pause at the cedar forests to observe the Barbary Apes in their natural habitat. Continuing through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass to Midelt, we navigate the striking Ziz Gorges, offering glimpses of the desert as we approach Errachidia. Following lunch, our expedition leads us through the Ziz Valley to Erfoud, Rissani, and finally Merzouga. Upon arrival, we indulge in a refreshing glass of mint tea before embarking on a camel ride to a Berber camp nestled amidst the towering Erg Chebbi Sand Dunes. The camel trek spans approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, culminating at the camp where we settle into Berber tents equipped with mattresses, blankets, and cushions. As evening descends, we gather around the campfire, relishing the hypnotic rhythm of traditional Berber drums beneath the star-studded sky.
Awakening early, we bask in the splendor of a sunrise over the dunes before indulging in a leisurely breakfast. Following this, we embark on a camel ride back to our hotel or riad. Our journey continues, meandering through Rissani Market, Arfoud, and Tinghir until we reach the dramatic Todra Gorges. From there, we proceed to the Dades Valley, where we’ll enjoy dinner and spend the night.
After breakfast, we set out through the Dades Valley towards Kalaat Mgouna and Ouarzazate, known as “the Hollywood of Africa.” En route, we traverse the route of the thousand Kasbahs, offering ample opportunities for scenic photographs. We venture through the Roses valley and Skoura village before arriving at the famed Ait Ben Haddou kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest Kasbah in Morocco. Following a tour of this historic site, our journey continues through the majestic Tizi nTichka pass, reaching an altitude of 2260 meters over the High Atlas Mountains. We pause to admire the breathtaking vistas and visit an argan oil cooperative before finally arriving in Marrakech late afternoon, marking the conclusion of our unforgettable adventure.
